Exam Pattern

Prelims, Mains & Interview.

LIC recruits through two main tracks — LIC AAO is a 3-stage officer exam (Prelims + Mains + Interview), while LIC Assistant is a 2-stage clerical exam (Prelims + Mains + Language Proficiency Test). Select a track below.

LIC AAO Prelims — 60 minutes, with sectional timing (20 minutes per section) · 100 questions · 70 marks. No negative marking for Generalist posts (Specialist/Legal posts have −0.25 per wrong answer in Reasoning & Quant). English Language is qualifying only — its marks are not counted for ranking.

** English Language is qualifying only — the 30 marks are not added to the Prelims score.

LIC AAO Mains — Objective Test (300 marks) + Descriptive Test (25 marks), both conducted online. The descriptive test is typed on the computer. Marks count toward final merit — for Generalist posts.

Interview: Candidates shortlisted after Mains appear for a Personal Interview (60 marks). Final merit = Mains Objective score (300) + Interview (60) = 360 marks. Prelims marks are NOT added once you clear. LIC AAO Generalist, IT, CA, Legal, and Rajbhasha streams all follow this same 3-stage structure but have stream-specific Paper I syllabus variations in Mains. There is a 1/4 negative mark for every wrong answer in the Mains objective section (Prelims negative marking applies only to Specialist/Legal posts, as noted above — Generalist Prelims has none).

LIC Assistant Prelims — 60 minutes, with sectional timing (20 minutes per section) · 100 questions · 100 marks. Qualifying for Mains.

Sectional minimum qualifying marks apply in Mains — 14 for SC/ST/PwBD, 16 for other categories, in each section.

Eligibility

Can You Apply?

LIC AAO requires a graduate degree from a recognised university. LIC Assistant eligibility is simpler — a basic graduation requirement with no minimum percentage — broader than RBI Grade B's graduate-only path.

LIC AAO — Education

Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized university. No minimum percentage specified — LIC AAO is open to all graduates. For specialized streams: IT (B.E./B.Tech in CS/IT), CA (qualified CA), Legal (LLB with 60%), Rajbhasha (Hindi + English proficiency).

LIC AAO — Age Limit

LIC AAO: 21–30 years. LIC Assistant: 18–30 years. Age relaxation: +5 years (SC/ST), +3 years (OBC non-creamy), +10 years (PwBD), additional for Ex-Servicemen. Age calculated as of the cutoff date in the notification.

LIC AAO — Experience Requirement

No prior work experience required for either AAO Generalist or LIC Assistant. Specialized streams (IT, CA, Legal) may specify relevant domain experience. Freshers are welcome to apply for both tracks.

LIC Assistant — Education

Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized university. No minimum percentage required. Basic computer knowledge mandatory. Final-year students generally not eligible — degree must be complete by the cutoff date in the notification.

Nationality

Citizen of India. Specific categories of migrants, refugees, and persons of Indian origin as defined under Government of India norms may also be eligible.

Number of Attempts

LIC does not impose a cap on the number of attempts for AAO or LIC Assistant or Development Assistant — you can apply every cycle as long as you meet the age and educational eligibility criteria.
Key flexibility: Unlike RBI Grade B (graduate-only, 60% minimum, no alternate route), LIC AAO has no minimum percentage requirement at all — you just need to have passed your graduation from a recognized university, plus professional-qualification holders (CA/CS/ICWA/Ph.D.) can also apply — broadening the eligible pool considerably. Always cross-verify against the official LIC notification, as LIC revises specifics each recruitment cycle.
Selection Process

How You Get Selected.

LIC AAO is a 3-stage selection (Prelims → Mains → Interview), while LIC Assistant is a 2-stage selection followed by a qualifying language check (Prelims → Mains → Local Language Proficiency Test) — there is no interview for LIC Assistant.

LIC AAO — Prelims (Screening Stage)

Prelims is a qualifying-cum-shortlisting stage only — out of 70 marks, with English Language qualifying (not counted). Marks scored here are NOT added to your final merit; they only decide who is shortlisted to sit for Mains, based on the category-wise overall cutoff.

LIC AAO — Mains + Interview

Mains has an Objective Test (300 marks, counts for merit) and a qualifying Descriptive Test (25 marks, evaluated only if you clear the objective cutoff). Shortlisted candidates then face a Personal Interview (60 marks). Final Merit = Mains Objective (300) + Interview (60) = 360. Prelims marks are not added once you clear.

LIC Assistant — Prelims (Screening Stage)

Prelims is out of 100 marks and is an overall qualifying cutoff with no sectional minimum. Like AAO, it is used only to shortlist candidates for Mains — the marks themselves do not carry forward into the final merit calculation.

LIC Assistant — Mains + Local Language Test

Mains is out of 200 marks across 5 sections, each with its own sectional qualifying cutoff. There is no interview for LIC Assistant — after Mains, shortlisted candidates take a Local Language Proficiency Test (qualifying, pass/fail only). Final Merit = Mains score alone.
Common final steps: Regardless of post, selection concludes with document verification and a pre-employment medical examination before a formal offer. Always cross-check the exact selection sequence against the official LIC notification for your recruitment cycle, since minor procedural details can be revised year to year.

LIC's compensation and benefits (LIC's own insurance products at concessional rates, comprehensive medical cover, NPS/PF/Gratuity) make it one of the most competitive yet accessible entry points — via the broader degree/PG/professional eligibility with no minimum percentage — into India's insurance and financial sector.

Previous Year Analysis

What Past Papers Show.

Qualitative trends observed across recent LIC AAO and Assistant cycles — useful for shaping how you prepare, not a substitute for the official cutoffs shown above.

Insurance Awareness Rewards Sector-Specific Prep

AAO & Assistant Mains
Questions increasingly draw on LIC-specific product launches, IRDAI circulars, and insurance-sector policy changes rather than generic banking GK
Candidates who track insurance-sector news specifically (not just general current affairs) tend to find this section more scoring

Reasoning Puzzles Have Grown More Complex

Mains — both tracks
Multi-variable seating arrangements and floor-based puzzles with conditional, scattered clues appear more often than simple linear arrangements
Prelims-level puzzles have stayed comparatively straightforward, keeping the gap between Prelims and Mains difficulty noticeably wide

Descriptive English Rewards Structure Over Flair

LIC AAO Mains
Essays and letters that follow a clear, formal structure tend to score more consistently than free-flowing prose
Legal Drafting (for AAO Legal stream) rewards precise, unambiguous language over elaborate vocabulary

Sectional Cutoffs Highlight Uneven Difficulty

LIC Assistant Mains
Reasoning & Computer Aptitude and Quantitative Aptitude have consistently been the sections candidates find hardest to clear comfortably, going by the sectional cutoff patterns in the Cutoff section above
This reinforces why balanced, section-wise practice matters more than depth in just one or two favourite areas
Preparation Strategy

How To Prepare, By Level.

LIC's Prelims-Mains structure rewards early speed-building followed by depth in Insurance Awareness and (for AAO) descriptive writing. Pick the track that matches where you are today.

Beginner

Build Reasoning and Quant/Numerical basics from the ground up, work on vocabulary and grammar daily, and get comfortable with the Prelims pattern using one full-length sectional-timed mock a week. Start reading about LIC's own products and IRDAI's role early — Insurance Awareness is a new subject for most first-time aspirants.

Intermediate

Shift to full-length Prelims mocks under strict sectional timing, and start practicing Mains-level puzzles and DI sets. Add a daily current affairs habit focused on banking, economy, and insurance. AAO aspirants should begin essay and letter writing practice; Assistant aspirants should start balancing all five Mains sections against their sectional cutoffs.

Advanced

Go deep on Insurance & Financial Market Awareness and Professional Knowledge (stream-specific) for AAO, with regular feedback on descriptive writing and mock interview practice once Mains is done. Assistant aspirants should stress-test weaker sections against sectional qualifying marks rather than only chasing an overall score.

Working Professional

Use time-boxed daily sessions (early morning or evening) focused on the highest-weightage sections — Reasoning and Insurance Awareness — and save longer, uninterrupted blocks for weekend full-length mocks. Use commute time for current affairs revision and vocabulary building on mobile rather than trying to fit in full study sessions daily.

FAQ

Common Questions.

When is LIC AAO 2026 notification?+
LIC AAO notification has recently been released around mid-August (16 August 2025 for the last cycle). Prelims are held roughly 6-7 weeks after the notification. LIC Assistant notification follows separately. Check licindia.in for official dates.
What is the LIC AAO exam pattern?+
Phase 1 (Prelims) has 100 questions for 70 marks in 60 minutes, with sectional timing (20 minutes each for Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, and English Language). There's no negative marking, and English Language is qualifying only — its marks aren't counted for ranking. Phase 2 (Mains) has an Objective Test (Reasoning, General Knowledge & Current Affairs, Data Analysis & Interpretation, Insurance & Financial Market Awareness — 300 marks, 120 minutes) plus a qualifying Descriptive Test (English/Legal Drafting — 25 marks, 30 minutes).
What is the LIC AAO marking scheme?+
Phase 1 has negative marking for incorrect answers in the objective sections, with the exact penalty specified each cycle in the notification — historically around 0.25 marks per wrong answer. Phase 2's descriptive papers are evaluated for content, structure, and language quality rather than simple right/wrong scoring.
Who is eligible for LIC AAO?+
Candidates need a Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized university — no minimum percentage is specified, you just need to have passed graduation. A Postgraduate/MBA or a professional qualification like CA/CS/ICWA/Ph.D. is also accepted. Age limit is typically 21-30 years, with standard reservation-category relaxations.
What is the LIC AAO salary?+
LIC AAO starts at a basic pay of ₹88,635/month, with gross salary around ₹1,20,674 and net (in-hand) salary around ₹1,07,222/month after deductions. LIC Assistant starts at a basic pay of ₹38,700/month, with gross salary around ₹66,510 and net (approx.) salary around ₹59,000/month. Both roles include LIC's own life insurance benefits, HRA, medical cover, and annual bonus.
Is there a limit on the number of attempts for LIC AAO or LIC Assistant?+
No. LIC does not cap the number of attempts for AAO or Assistant — you can apply in every recruitment cycle as long as you continue to meet the age and educational eligibility criteria specified in that year's notification. This is unlike some other exams that restrict attempts by category.
Are calculators allowed inside the LIC exam hall?+
No physical calculators, mobile phones, smartwatches, or other electronic devices are permitted inside the exam hall for either LIC AAO or LIC Assistant. All calculations for Quantitative Aptitude/Numerical Ability and Data Interpretation must be done manually using the rough sheet provided at the venue, which is collected back before you leave.
What is a good score to aim for in LIC AAO or Assistant Prelims?+
Since Prelims is only a qualifying-cum-shortlisting stage (see the Cutoff section above for the last five years' category-wise trends), the safest approach is to clear it with a comfortable margin above the General category cutoff rather than just scraping through. Because Prelims marks are not carried forward, your real target should be judged against the Mains + Interview (for AAO) or Mains-only (for Assistant) cutoffs shown in the Cutoff section, not the Prelims number alone.
What is the application fee for LIC AAO and LIC Assistant?+
LIC charges a nominal application fee for General/OBC/EWS category candidates, with a reduced or waived fee for SC/ST/PwBD and Ex-Servicemen candidates, as specified in each year's official notification. LIC staff candidates who meet the eligibility criteria may also be eligible for fee reimbursement after verification. Always check the exact fee structure in the current notification on licindia.in, since it can change between cycles.
Does LIC AAO have an Interview? What about LIC Assistant?+
Yes — LIC AAO candidates who clear the Mains objective test appear for a Personal Interview worth 60 marks, and the final merit list is prepared from Mains Objective (300) + Interview (60) = 360 marks; Prelims marks are not added once you clear. The interview typically assesses communication skills, general and insurance-sector awareness, and overall suitability for an officer-level role. LIC Assistant, by contrast, has no interview at all — its final merit is based purely on the Mains score, followed only by a qualifying Local Language Proficiency Test.
What age relaxation is available for reserved categories in LIC exams?+
The standard LIC age relaxation is +5 years for SC/ST candidates, +3 years for OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates, and +10 years for PwBD candidates, with additional relaxation for Ex-Servicemen as specified in the notification. These relaxations apply on top of the standard age band (21-30 for AAO, 18-30 for Assistant), and age is calculated as of the cutoff date mentioned in that year's official notification.
What is the Local Language Proficiency Test (LPT) for LIC Assistant?+
After clearing Mains, LIC Assistant candidates must appear for a Local Language Proficiency Test for the state/division they applied to — it is qualifying only (pass/fail) and does not carry marks that count toward merit. Candidates must demonstrate reading, writing, and speaking proficiency in the local/official language of that region; failing it can disqualify an otherwise well-ranked candidate, so it's worth preparing for early if you're applying to a non-native-language state.
