All three RRB tracks share the same five core subjects, but the stages differ sharply: PO has Prelims + Mains + Interview, Clerk skips the interview entirely, and Scale-II skips Prelims and goes straight to a single exam.

Marking Scheme: 1 mark for every correct answer, −0.25 (1/4th) for every incorrect one, no penalty for unattempted questions. Mains has one composite 120-minute timer, not per-section limits (only Prelims is sectionally timed). Both Prelims and Mains have sectional as well as overall cut-offs — you must clear the minimum mark in each section, not just the total. After Mains, candidates are called for an Interview. Final merit considers only Mains and Interview marks — Prelims marks are not added at any stage.

Clerk Prelims is identical to PO Prelims — same two sections, same marks, same time. Mains is also nearly identical to PO Mains, with one difference: Clerk's Quantitative section is called "Numerical Ability" and there's no interview afterward.

No Interview, No Surprises: 1 mark per correct answer, −0.25 for every incorrect one. Mains has one composite 120-minute timer, not per-section limits. Both stages have sectional and overall cut-offs. There is no interview at all for Office Assistant — selection is purely on Mains marks, which is the single biggest reason this exam draws such large applicant numbers every year.

Officer Scale-II has no Prelims — candidates go straight to a single online exam. There are two streams: General Banking Officer (GBO) and Specialist Officer (SO) for IT, Law, CA, Marketing and Agriculture roles, with the latter adding a Professional Knowledge section.

Work Experience — Mandatory

Two years as an officer in a bank/financial institution for GBO; 1–2 years in the relevant field for most Specialist Officer streams (varies by stream).

Stream-Specific Requirements

IT Officer needs a Computer Science/Electronics degree; CA Officer needs ICAI membership; Law Officer needs an LLB plus 2 years as advocate or bank law officer.
Unlike PO and Clerk, there is no fresher entry point for Scale-II — work experience is mandatory across every stream. Age and vacancy figures above are from the last completed cycle; re-verify against the 2026 notification.
Selection Process

Prelims. Mains. Then What?

The stage flow is the single biggest practical difference between the two posts — PO adds an Interview after Mains, Office Assistant does not.

RRB PO — Prelims → Mains → Interview → Final Merit

Prelims (Reasoning + Numerical Ability) is qualifying only and its marks are not added anywhere later. Mains (200 marks across five sections) is the main hurdle, with both sectional and overall cutoffs to clear. Candidates who clear Mains sit for a Personal Interview coordinated by the Nodal RRB with NABARD and IBPS. Final merit combines Mains and Interview marks only.

RRB Office Assistant — Prelims → Mains → Final Merit

Same two written stages as PO — Prelims qualifies candidates for Mains, and Mains (200 marks) has both sectional and overall cutoffs. There is no Interview stage at all for Office Assistant — the Mains score alone decides the final merit list, which is why this post draws such a large number of applicants every cycle.
Note: Sectional cutoffs apply within Mains for both posts — clearing the overall cutoff alone is not enough if a candidate falls short in any individual section. Always cross-check the stage flow against the year's official notification, since IBPS can revise the process cycle to cycle.

A Plan For Where You're Starting From.

RRB's Prelims is shorter and simpler than SBI or IBPS PO/Clerk (no English section, only 45 minutes), and Mains runs on one composite timer rather than per-section limits — how you prepare should account for that lighter structure.

Beginner (New To Banking Exams)

RRB Prelims is the most beginner-friendly Prelims among bank exams — just Reasoning and Numerical Ability, no English. Build calculation speed and core reasoning fundamentals topic by topic before attempting full mocks, then start a daily current-affairs habit early for the Mains-only General Awareness section.

Intermediate (Cleared A Similar Prelims Before)

Since RRB Prelims mirrors the SBI/IBPS Clerk and PO pattern minus English, candidates with some Prelims experience can skip re-learning basics and move straight to timed sectional practice — with extra focus on puzzle variety, since RRB Mains reasoning leans heavily on multi-condition puzzles.

Advanced (Targeting PO Over Office Assistant)
