Eligibility

Can You Apply?

TANCET eligibility is straightforward — a qualifying bachelor's degree with Mathematics.

Bachelor's Degree with Mathematics

Mathematics as one subject at 10+2 or graduation level, from a recognized university.

Minimum 50% Aggregate

General category candidates need 50% aggregate marks; reserved category candidates need 45%.

Domicile & Open Category

Tamil Nadu domicile is preferred for state quota seats; open category seats are available to candidates from other states, subject to each college's policy.
After The Exam

Selection Process.

Admission to MCA seats through TANCET does not end with the exam — a rank list and counselling round follow before a seat is confirmed.

Rank List Publication

Anna University releases the TANCET rank list/score card after evaluation, based on which candidates become eligible for counselling.

Counselling Registration

Ranked candidates register for counselling and submit preferences for participating colleges and MCA programs.

Seat Allotment

Seats are allotted based on rank, category, and choices filled during counselling for the participating colleges.

Document Verification & Admission

Candidates report to the allotted college with original documents for verification and fee payment to confirm the MCA seat.

Trends

Previous Year Analysis.

Qualitative observations from past TANCET MCA cycles — useful context while planning your preparation, not a substitute for official data.

Equal Weightage Across Sections

25 questions each
The revised pattern gives equal weightage (25 marks) to all four sections, making an all-rounded preparation more important than before.
Candidates can no longer rely on a single strong section to carry their overall score into the top percentile.

Score Thresholds Have Moved Up Slightly

Based on year-over-year TANCET MCA score trends
The mark range for the 99th percentile moved from 75+ in 2024 to 78+ in 2026, and the 90th–99th band from 55–74 to 58–77.
This points to a gradually more competitive field — aiming a few marks above the previous year's threshold is a reasonable target.

Negative Marking Demands Accuracy

Introduction of -0.25 penalty
The introduction of a -0.25 penalty for wrong answers completely changes attempt strategies from past cycles where blind guessing was risk-free.
Accuracy over volume is now the key to breaking into the top percentiles.
How To Prepare

Preparation Strategy By Level.

TANCET MCA aspirants come in at different starting points — here's how Thinkoraa's coaching approach adapts to each.

Beginner

Start with NCERT-level Mathematics fundamentals and basic reasoning patterns, and build familiarity with OMR-sheet shading and timing before moving to timed practice.

Intermediate

Focus on strengthening weaker Mathematics topics, practising varied reasoning question types, and attempting sectional tests to track accuracy and speed.

Advanced

Prioritise full-length mock tests under exam conditions, error-log review, and refining time allocation across Mathematics, Reasoning and Computer Awareness.

Working Professional

Use focused, high-yield revision sessions around work hours, prioritise high-weightage Mathematics topics first, and rely on weekend mock tests to simulate exam-day pacing.

Frequently Asked Questions

TANCET (Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test) is conducted by Anna University, Chennai, for admission into MCA, M.E./M.Tech, and MBA programs at universities and colleges across Tamil Nadu.

TANCET MCA is a 2-hour offline, OMR-based test with 100 multiple-choice questions covering Quantitative Ability, Analytical Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, and Computer Awareness, with a -0.25 negative marking for each incorrect answer.

Registration has typically opened between January and March in recent cycles, with the exam conducted 4-8 weeks later, between March and May. Exact dates are notified on the official Anna University TANCET website each cycle — check our registration timeline below for this year's dates.

No — TANCET has both state quota seats (which prefer Tamil Nadu domicile) and open category seats available to candidates from other states, subject to each college's specific policy.

There is no cap on the number of times you can attempt TANCET — you can appear every year as long as you meet the eligibility criteria (a qualifying bachelor's degree with Mathematics) for that admission cycle.

No — calculators are not permitted inside the TANCET exam hall. TANCET is an offline, OMR-based test (answers are shaded on an OMR sheet with a black ballpoint pen), so no on-screen calculator is available either — you'll need to work out numerical questions manually.

Based on recent cycles, scores of 78+ placed candidates in the 99th percentile in 2026 (75+ in 2024), while 58–77 marks corresponded to the 90th–99th percentile band. Aim as high above these thresholds as possible for a wider choice of colleges.

TANCET charges a nominal, category-wise application fee (General/OBC candidates typically pay more than SC/ST/differently-abled candidates) payable online during registration. The exact fee amount is notified by Anna University each cycle, so always check the current fee on the official TANCET portal before applying.

After the rank list/score card is released, eligible candidates register for counselling, fill their college and course preferences, and are allotted seats based on rank, category and choices filled. Selected candidates then report to the allotted college for document verification and fee payment to confirm admission.

Candidates are generally expected to carry their TANCET admit card and rank/score card, mark sheets and degree certificate of the qualifying exam, category certificate (if applicable), and a valid photo ID for document verification during counselling — refer to the official counselling notification for the exact checklist.

Yes — while General category candidates need a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in their qualifying degree, reserved category candidates need a minimum of 45% aggregate to be eligible for TANCET MCA admission.
