Based on the confirmed XAT 2027 pattern. Unlike CAT, there's no fixed time limit per section in Part 1 — you manage 170 minutes across VALR, DM, and QA/DI yourself. The GK section is a separate, timed 10-minute block at the end.

Marking Scheme: +1 for every correct answer. −0.25 for every incorrect answer. You can skip up to 8 questions penalty-free; beyond that, −0.1 per skipped question. Eligibility
Can You Apply?
XAT has one of the most flexible eligibility criteria among major MBA entrance exams — no minimum percentage and no age limit.
Bachelor's Degree
A 3-year bachelor's degree (or UGC-recognized equivalent) in any discipline. Open to candidates from any stream — engineering, commerce, arts, science, or law.
No Minimum Percentage
Unlike CAT, XLRI sets no minimum graduation percentage to appear for XAT. Your academic record is still considered later, during XLRI's final merit-list stage.
Final-Year Students
Eligible to apply, provided the degree is completed by the specified deadline (typically mid-year of the admission year).
No Age Limit, No Attempt Cap
There's no minimum or maximum age to apply, and no limit on how many times you can attempt XAT.
Work experience isn't required for XAT or for XLRI's BM/HRM programmes. The exception is XLRI's General Management Programme (GMP), which requires at least 5 years of full-time managerial experience. NRI, PIO, OCI, and foreign nationals can apply via GMAT (GRE accepted only for PGDM-GM), at a separate application fee of ₹5,000.
Selection Process
A XAT Score Alone Doesn't Get You In.
XAT is a multi-stage process. XLRI runs its own shortlisting, essay, and interview process for BM/HRM/GMP — every other XAT-accepting institute sets its own separate process after the score is out.
1. XAT Score / Percentile Shortlisting
Each XAT-accepting institute — XLRI included — sets its own overall (and sometimes sectional) percentile cutoffs to shortlist candidates for the next stage. Cutoffs vary by institute, programme, and category.
2. Essay Writing
XLRI's own stage is a timed, written essay on an abstract, current-affairs, or business prompt — not a Group Discussion. XLRI does not conduct a GD, though many other XAT-accepting colleges (not XLRI) run a GD or WAT as part of their own shortlist process.
3. Personal Interview (PI)
A panel interview covering academic background, work experience (if any), current affairs, and questions on your essay and application form. Conducted by XLRI and, separately, by each other shortlisting institute.
4. Final Composite Score & Merit List
XAT score, essay, PI performance, academic profile, and work experience are combined using each institute's own weightage formula to produce the final merit list. The exact formula — and how much each component matters — varies significantly by institute.

Important: XLRI's own weightage formula for BM/HRM/GMP is published separately from other XAT-accepting institutes' processes, and it differs meaningfully from how SPJIMR, XIMB, TAPMI, or other colleges weight the same components. Always check each target institute's official admission policy — usually released shortly after the XAT result — before finalizing your college strategy.

● RC passages have leaned increasingly toward dense, abstract, and literary themes — tougher and less predictable than CAT's VARC
● Para-jumbles and critical-reasoning-style questions appear most years, but their exact count fluctuates
● Vocabulary and grammar-based questions have become a smaller, but still present, share of the section
Decision Making Trend
● Has become the most differentiating and toughest section in recent years — even strong overall scorers often underperform here
● Caselets have grown more layered, often combining an ethical dilemma with a business trade-off in the same set
● Since it can't be "solved" with formulas, consistent exposure to past-paper caselets matters more than any single prep technique
QADI & GK Trend
● QADI difficulty has trended upward in recent cycles, with calculation-heavy DI sets adding to time pressure
● Arithmetic and Algebra remain the highest-weightage topic groups within QADI every year
● GK's qualifying-only status under XLRI's current policy means it consistently ranks as the lowest prep priority relative to time invested — though it can still matter at the shortlisting margin

Preparation Strategy
A Different Plan For Every Starting Point.
XAT prep isn't just "CAT prep plus GK" — Decision Making needs its own approach, and the essay/GK components need dedicated time most other MBA exams don't require.
Beginner (First Attempt, 6+ Months Out)
Build QADI fundamentals from Class 8–10 level up. Start solving 3–4 Decision Making caselets a week just to get comfortable with the format — don't expect speed yet. Begin a daily GK-reading habit (one current-affairs digest + one static-GK topic) so it compounds over months rather than being crammed later.
Intermediate (One Mock Attempted, 3–6 Months Out)
Start sectional tests to isolate weak QADI topics. Increase Decision Making volume — review every caselet you get wrong to understand XLRI's reasoning, not just the "correct" answer. Write one timed essay every week or two to build a natural pace and structure.
Advanced (Targeting 95%ile+, <3 Months Out)
Heavy focus on Decision Making consistency — since there's no formula, the goal is a stable, repeatable judgment process across dilemma types. 3–4 full mocks per week with time-allocation analysis across VALR/DM/QADI (remember: no fixed per-section timer in Part 1). Keep GK revision active — it's still part of final shortlisting.
Working Professional (Limited Daily Hours)
Time-boxed study: 1–1.5 hours on weekdays, 4–5 hours on weekends. Decision Making and GK both fit well into short daily slots (10–15 caselets or a news digest during commute). Prioritize QADI's highest-weightage arithmetic/algebra topics over chasing every topic equally.

How many times can I attempt XAT?+
There's no cap — XAT has no limit on the number of attempts and no minimum or maximum age, so you can retake it in consecutive years if you don't get the outcome you want.
Is a calculator allowed in the XAT exam?+
No physical calculators are allowed. A basic on-screen scientific calculator is provided within the CBT interface for calculation-heavy QADI questions.
What is a good XAT percentile for XLRI vs other XAT-accepting colleges?+
For XLRI's BM and HRM programmes, historical cutoffs for general-category candidates have generally sat in the low-to-mid 90s percentile range in recent years (see the Score vs Percentile section for year-wise figures) — though the exact number shifts annually and by category. Many other XAT-accepting institutes like SPJIMR, XIMB, and MICA shortlist in a similar or slightly lower percentile band, while colleges further down the list accept scores well below 90%ile. What is the XAT 2027 application fee?+
₹2,300 for the base XAT application, plus an additional ₹200 for each XLRI programme (BM, HRM, GMP) you apply to, payable online during registration.
What does the Decision Making section actually test?+
DM presents business and ethical caselets — scenarios involving trade-offs between stakeholders, managerial dilemmas, and situational judgment calls. It has no fixed syllabus and no formula-based questions; XLRI designed it to test how consistently and reasonably you make judgment calls, not how much theory you've memorized.
What documents should I carry on XAT exam day?+
Your XAT admit card (printed) and a valid original photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, passport, driving licence, or voter ID) matching the name on your admit card. Photocopies or expired IDs are typically not accepted.
What's the difference between XLRI's essay stage and the GD/WAT rounds some other XAT colleges run?+
