Eligibility

Can You Apply?

SSC eligibility varies by exam — CGL needs a degree, CHSL needs Class 12, MTS needs only Class 10. This makes SSC one of the most accessible government exam routes in India. Thinkoraa's SSC coaching team helps verify eligibility before enrollment.

SSC CGL — Education

Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university. No minimum percentage. JSO posts need Statistics/Maths in graduation. AAO posts need Commerce/Maths/Economics with Accountancy.

SSC CHSL — Education

Class 12 (10+2) pass from a recognised board. No minimum percentage. For DEO posts at C&AG offices: Science stream with Maths preferred but not mandatory.

SSC MTS — Education

Matric (Class 10 pass) from a recognised board. Most accessible SSC exam — no minimum percentage. Same qualification for Havaldar posts in CBIC & CBN.

SSC CPO — Education & Physical

Bachelor's degree. Physical mandatory: Male: Height 170cm, Chest 80cm, Run 1.6km in 6.5 min. Female: Height 157cm, Run 800m in 4 min. Eye standards also specified in notification.

Age Limits

CGL: 18–32 years (post-wise). CHSL: 18–27 years. MTS: 18–25 years (Havaldar posts: 18–27 years). CPO SI: 20–25 years. Relaxation: +5 yrs (SC/ST), +3 yrs (OBC), +10 yrs (PwBD), as per central government norms.

Attempts

SSC does not cap the number of attempts for any exam. You can appear every cycle as long as you meet the age limit. Age is calculated as of the cutoff date in the official notification.

Selection Process

From Written Exam To Appointment.

Every SSC exam on this page starts with a common written stage, then branches by post. Here's exactly what happens after Tier I / Paper I for CGL, CHSL, MTS and CPO — based on the pattern details above.

Stage 1 — Tier I / Paper I (CBT)

Common to all 4 exams. CGL and CHSL Tier I, MTS Paper I, and CPO Paper I are all objective CBTs covering Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, English and General Awareness (weightage differs by exam — see Exam Pattern above). This stage shortlists/ranks candidates for the next stage.

Stage 2 — CGL Tier II

Paper I (Sections I–III) is mandatory for every CGL post. Paper II (Statistics) is required only for Junior Statistical Officer (JSO) posts. Paper III (Finance & Economics) is required only for Assistant Audit/Accounts Officer (AAO) posts. No interview since 2022 — selection is Tier I + Tier II merit alone.

Stage 2 — CHSL Tier II

One combined CBT session (Maths + Reasoning/English/GA, with a qualifying Computer Knowledge module), followed by a separate qualifying Skill Test/Typing Test for the relevant post (LDC/JSA, PA/SA, DEO). No interview.

MTS & Havaldar — Direct Merit

No Tier II. Selection is Paper I merit alone. Havaldar posts (CBIC & CBN) additionally require a Physical Efficiency Test/Physical Standards Test (PET/PST) after Paper I — regular MTS posts do not.

CPO — PET/PST Then Paper II

Only CPO Sub-Inspector/ASI posts require a Physical Standards Test/Physical Efficiency Test (height, chest, running standards) — cleared candidates from Paper I attempt it before Paper II. Paper II (English Language & Comprehension) is then merit-based for final selection.

Document Verification & Medical

Document Verification is the common final stage across CGL, CHSL, MTS and CPO before appointment. CPO SI/ASI posts additionally require a Medical Examination after Paper II. CGL and CHSL (non-Havaldar) posts do not involve any physical or medical stage.

CGL, CHSL, MTS and CPO share a large common syllabus — Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, English and General Awareness — across their Tier I / Paper I stage. One well-built preparation track can realistically cover multiple SSC exams at once; only Tier II add-ons (CGL Statistics/Finance papers, CPO's English-only Paper II) need exam-specific extra work.

Beginner

Start with NCERT-level basics for Quant and GA, build core grammar rules for English, and learn foundational reasoning concepts (analogy, classification, series). Focus on accuracy over speed and take a diagnostic to identify weak sections before choosing which SSC exam(s) to target.

Intermediate

Move to sectional timed practice across all 4 core subjects, start daily current-affairs revision, and begin full-length Tier I / Paper I mocks. Since CGL, CHSL, MTS and CPO overlap heavily at this stage, the same practice set builds readiness for all of them together.

When is SSC CGL 2026 notification?+

The SSC CGL 2026 notification was released on 21 May 2026 for 12,256 vacancies. The online application window closed in late June 2026. Tier I (Prelims) is expected August–September 2026, and Tier II in December 2026. Check ssc.gov.in for the official PDF and vacancy breakdown.

What is the SSC CGL exam pattern?+

SSC CGL has a 2-tier structure. Tier I is a single 100-question, 200-mark objective test (1 hour) covering Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, and English — all merit-counted, with no qualifying/merit split. Tier II Paper I is mandatory for all posts: Section I (Mathematical Abilities + Reasoning, 180 marks), Section II (English + General Awareness, 210 marks), and a qualifying Computer Knowledge module plus a Data Entry Speed Test. Paper II (Statistics) applies only to JSO posts and Paper III (Finance & Economics) only to AAO posts. There is no separate descriptive tier or interview for most posts since 2022.

What is SSC negative marking?+

Tier I has a negative marking of 0.50 marks per wrong answer. Tier II has a negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer in Section I, Section II, and Module I of Section III of Paper I and 0.50 marks for each wrong answer in Paper II.

Who is eligible for SSC CGL?+

Candidates need a Bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized university. There is no minimum percentage requirement. Age limit is typically 18-32 years depending on the post, with standard reservation-category relaxations.

What is the SSC CGL salary?+

Is there negative marking in SSC exams, and how many attempts are allowed?+

Negative marking varies by exam: SSC CGL Tier I deducts 0.50 marks and Tier II Paper I deducts 1 mark per wrong answer (0.50 in Paper II); SSC CHSL's combined session is negatively marked; SSC MTS has no negative marking in Session I but −1 mark in Session II; SSC CPO deducts 0.25 marks per wrong answer. Are calculators allowed in SSC CGL, CHSL, MTS or CPO?+

No. Calculators, log tables, mobile phones and any other electronic or printed aids are not permitted inside the exam hall for any SSC CBT. All calculations must be done manually; rough sheets are provided at the centre and collected back after the exam.

What is a good score in SSC CGL or CHSL Tier I?+

There's no fixed "good score" since SSC normalises marks across shifts and cutoffs shift year to year — see the category-wise Tier I cutoffs in the Cutoffs section above. As a general rule, aiming meaningfully above the general-category cutoff shown there is a safer target than aiming exactly at it, since normalization and difficulty level can move the final cutoff up or down.

What is the SSC application fee?+

SSC charges a nominal, uniform application fee for General/OBC/EWS male candidates across CGL, CHSL, MTS and CPO. Women candidates and SC/ST/PwBD/Ex-servicemen candidates are fully fee-exempted. The exact fee amount and accepted payment modes are specified in each exam's official notification at ssc.gov.in.

Document Verification is the common final stage across CGL, CHSL, MTS and CPO before appointment (no interview for any of these since 2022). Havaldar posts (CBIC & CBN, under the MTS exam) additionally require a Physical Efficiency Test/Physical Standards Test (PET/PST) — regular MTS posts do not. SSC CPO Sub-Inspector/ASI posts require PET/PST (height, chest, running standards) between Paper I and Paper II, followed by a Medical Examination after Paper II. CGL and CHSL posts do not involve any physical or medical stage.

Is there age relaxation for reserved categories in SSC exams?+

Yes. Standard SSC age relaxations are +5 years for SC/ST, +3 years for OBC, and +10 years for PwBD candidates, applied on top of each post's base age limit (e.g., CGL 18–32, CHSL 18–27, MTS 18–25 (Havaldar 18–27), CPO SI 20–25). Additional relaxation for Ex-servicemen and certain departmental candidates is specified separately in each exam's notification.

Can I apply for more than one SSC exam in the same year?+

Yes — SSC CGL, CHSL, MTS and CPO run as separate recruitment cycles with separate applications and fees, and their exam windows across the year often don't clash. Since all four share the same core Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude, English and General Awareness syllabus, many aspirants prepare once with a single track and apply to all four to maximize their chances.
